The Appalachian
The Appalachian South is a fairly large area that includes western Maryland, West Virginia, parts of southern Ohio, western Virginia, eastern Kentucky, western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, northwestern South Carolina, northern Georgia and northern Alabama. In this region the Appalachian Mountain is a dominant feature making crops difficult with cool climate, irregular terrain and shallow soil.
The people from this region adopted foraging practices and had to be very creative with their cooking as the region is filled with natural challenges. Home growing products was a must, it is not by chance that this region is the home of some of the best moonshine in world.
